We talk a lot about the many ways social media can benefit recruiting. In addition to finding talented people who are not active on the job boards, social media is great at personalizing your company and selling passive job seekers on why they should work with you. Videos, podcasts, blog posts, Facebook discussion forums, etc. can effectively deliver your employment brand messages but do they really convey why your company does what it does?

JCSI will participate in the SHRM Staffing Conference again this year. This year, the event will be at the Disney Swan and Dolphin resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL on April 26-27. This is one of our favorite events of the year and we are looking forward to something special this year. Attendee pre-registrations are way up over where they were last year and the scheduled sessions cover some emerging technology practices this year.
To add to the conference, JCSI will be hosting another Social Media Strategy Workshop on the exhibit floor. This is highly-informative 20 minute session complements the topics covered during the conference sessions and provides participants with an action plan they can take back to their team.

JCSI is excited to be a part of the Social Media Plus conference in Philadelphia on May 25. I’ll be presenting “The Future of Recruiting is Social – Leveraging Social Media to Attract High Quality Candidates Faster and at a Lower Cost”. The presentation will review how digital media is changing recruitment best practices. I’ll discuss the ways social media tools are being applied to build a pipeline and move candidates through the interview process.
This is a unique event that is going to appeal to a lot of people. While most social media conferences target a specific audience segment, the 28 sessions in this show are aligned along four functional tracks – HR, IT, Sales & Marketing and Executives. This gives attendees an opportunity to dive deep in their area of expertise or they can see how the principles of social media are being applied across an organization. Since the best social media strategies are based on a “hub and spoke” model, executives can get what they need to develop the core principles of the company’s approach to social media. Each department (or business unit) can then apply the principles to communicate effectively with their audience segment – while being tightly aligned with each other.
I’m the first session at 9am right after the keynote. I hope you can make it. Registration information is available on their site at: www.socialmediaplus.com. Let me know if you are planning to attend bcavoli@jcsi.net.

For a college student, entering a College Career Fair venue is like walking into a cafeteria. Both facilities are crammed with decisions, persuasion and the uncertainty of what to choose or where to turn next. Sure, students have to do some impressing, but at College Career Fairs, companies are the ones who possess the task of attracting top talent. Students and representatives from companies both play eminent roles in the career fair game. Students have to take off their sweats, conjure up a resume and bring their A-game to prove they are worth a closer look. Companies on the other hand need to stand out amongst a crowd and portray themselves as the entrée students wait in line for.

I had an opportunity to film a segment on social media for the New England Job Show recently. If you’re not familiar with them, the New England Job Show is a TV show about helping job seekers succeed in their job search. Shows are streamed on their website at NEJS.org and they are available on TV on Comcast OnDemand in the Local Programs area.

With the economy beginning to turn around, entry-level job seekers are starting to shop around the job market instead of jumping at the first company who offers them a paycheck. Choosing a first job is a tough decision for anyone, but for recent college graduates, it’s their first leap into the real world.
A few months prior to graduation; my classes, email inbox and seemingly every conversation I had with my parents revolved around my job search. I hadn’t even ordered my cap and gown and already I was stressed about what I was going to do with my post-college existence. What do I want to do with my life? The question was so simple, yet so complicated. Along with the millions of other students in America who graduated alongside me, we all pined over the same question which was more difficult than any we would find on a final exam.

We know that many companies are still reluctant to jump into social media, but why? Equation Research provides some interesting insights in their new Marketing Industry Trends report. The report compares the responses from agencies, small companies and larger companies (defined as 500 or more employees) to see how marketing is evolving with the changing consumer/media landscape. It is interesting to see how each of these groups view social media differently, but we’ll focus on the responses from large companies here.

The Wall Street Journal has an article this week discussing why they expect we’ll see a quick rebound in the labor-market. They claim the severity of this recession caused companies to be “unusually aggressive” in cutting jobs so they’ll have to increase hiring quickly to grow. The article points out several specific reasons why this labor market recovery will be much stronger than what we saw in the last two recessions.

As a staffing partner to Boston Scientific, JCSI has created a careers page for Boston Scientific on the Facebook social network. We are big believers that social media participation on sites like Facebook are the most effective way to communicate the value of a career with a company and to recruit talented people not actively looking for a job.

A new study from Altimeter Group and the Wetpaint shows that financial performance of a company correlates to the level of engagement the company has with its audience in social media.
The report analyzes the social media activities and practices of the 100 brands in BusinessWeek’s 2008 “Best Global Brand” publication. Companies were evaluated on 40 social media attributes and the results were cross-referenced to the company’s publicly available financial reports. The results are pretty compelling. Those companies with the greatest engagement scores outperformed other companies in both revenue and profit. Read More

There are many studies about the amazing growth of Twitter, but it is more interesting to see how the influence of Twitter is changing business. Here is another anecdote… PR blogger Todd Defren had problems with his new Netgear router so he called the company’s customer service number for assistance. After waiting on hold for half an hour he was dumped into a voice mail with a message promicing a prompt return call. You know what happens next – days go by and that return call never came. Todd airs his frustration on Twitter and within minutes he gets a response from Netgear on Twitter and he is given a direct line to a specialist who solves his problem in minutes.
